El Clasico: Why Barcelona Struggled Against Real Madrid in 2-1 Loss – De Jong

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday October 26, 2026, Frenkie de Jong has explained why Barcelona struggled during their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the 2026/27 season.

The Dutch midfielder admitted that Hansi Flick’s side lacked their usual fluidity in possession and made costly mistakes that allowed their opponents to exploit their strengths. De Jong also expressed his determination to regain a regular starting position after returning to action.

Barcelona suffered a disappointing home defeat at the Spotify Camp Nou, extending a difficult week for the Catalan club. De Jong acknowledged the pain of losing such an important fixture, particularly in front of their supporters.

“Losing always hurts, especially at home and in El Clasico. It was not the result we wanted, but we are still top of the table and must recover from this difficult week,” the midfielder explained.

De Jong identified Barcelona’s problems with possession as a major factor behind their defeat. He admitted that their inability to move the ball smoothly allowed Madrid to create dangerous situations after winning possession.

“We were not as fluid as usual and lost the ball more frequently. That plays into their strengths because they have decisive and quick players who can punish mistakes during the first or second phase of build-up,” he added.

The Dutch international also addressed the competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield. He acknowledged the quality within the squad but insisted that he was eager to earn his starting position again.

Barcelona have several talented midfielders competing for opportunities, making regular selection difficult. However, De Jong views the situation as a normal part of representing a club with such high expectations.

Joao Cancelo offered a different assessment of the encounter, insisting that Barcelona were the better team despite their defeat. The Portuguese defender nevertheless admitted that his side needed to control possession more effectively instead of relying excessively on their high press.

Cancelo stressed that Barcelona must improve their ball circulation and dictate matches more consistently. Despite creating more opportunities in his assessment, the defender recognised that Madrid’s clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive.
