According to a report by Metro on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes his former club made a mistake by failing to sign Ezri Konsa before the defender completed his £55million move from Aston Villa to Arsenal.
The England international has enjoyed an impressive beginning to life at the Emirates Stadium since arriving during the summer transfer window, quickly establishing himself as an important member of Mikel Arteta's squad.
The 29-year-old was immediately introduced into Arsenal's starting lineup following William Saliba's injury, helping the Gunners record 13 victories in their opening 16 matches across all competitions.
Konsa delivered another outstanding performance on Sunday as Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Liverpool, ending their 14-year wait for a Premier League win at Anfield.
Ferdinand was so impressed with the defender that he encouraged his 18-year-old son Tate, who plays as a centre-back in Brighton's academy, to pay particular attention to Konsa's performance.
The former Manchester United captain also admitted that he wished his old club had secured the defender's signature before Arsenal completed their transfer.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand discussed whether Konsa could retain his position when Saliba returns from injury. He believes the Frenchman remains too important to leave out of the starting eleven.
Ferdinand explained: "I think William Saliba is one of those guys that you have to find room for in the team. He's that good, he's top."
However, he suggested that Konsa could move across to right-back, where he has previously played, potentially competing with Jurrien Timber for a regular starting position.
Discussing the defender's qualities, Ferdinand added: "I said to my son yesterday, 'watch Ezri Konsa', because everything he does is efficient. That's a great problem for Mikel Arteta to have."
He continued: "He's a top, top player and another one I thought Manchester United should have got because he's a top player."
Ferdinand also praised how quickly Konsa has adapted to Arsenal, highlighting the difficult selection decisions his performances are creating for Arteta.
"What a signing he's been for Arsenal," the former United defender concluded.
Meanwhile, Arteta described Arsenal's historic victory at Anfield as remarkable, expressing pride in his players after finally overcoming their difficult record at Liverpool's stadium.
