Steven Gerrard Warns Xabi Alonso That £29m Chelsea Star Could Create a Selection Dilemma

According to a report by Metro on Thursday November 5, 2026, Steven Gerrard, a former captain for Liverpool, thinks that Xabi Alonso will have a tough time choosing his attacking lineup for the rest of the season because of Chelsea youngster Estevao.

Reports indicated that the teenage Brazilian winger was unhappy with his limited playing time, and Alonso had previously come under fire for benching him in last week's Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool.

Nevertheless, last Saturday, Estevao made his Premier League debut against Manchester United, and he played brilliantly as Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Gerrard was especially taken aback by the 19-year-attacker old's game, praising his self-assurance, imagination, and eagerness to challenge defenders instead of waiting for more passes.

While appearing on The Overlap, the ex-England international gushed about Estevao, calling him a "exciting" footballer. Observing him is a delight.

Gerrard praised the winger's technical skill and Brazilian flair, and he praised his directness of approach and desire to test goalkeepers whenever possible.

He drew parallels between Estevao's aggressive mindset and that of Liverpool's forwards, implying that some of the latter may be hesitant to shoot at times in favor of finding an extra pass or producing an ideal opportunity.

During the match against Manchester United, Gerrard singled out an offensive move involving Estevao and a teammate that culminated in an attempt that the opposing goalkeeper made a fantastic save from.

He also thought back to another occasion when the kid had a chance to slow down the attack and pass to the edge of the penalty area, but instead, he was dead set on scoring.

Gerrard claims that Estevao's eagerness shows his determination to become an important part of Chelsea's first team and impress Alonso.

When Joao Pedro returns from injury, the youngster's outstanding performance, according to the former Liverpool midfielder, could cause a major selection headache.

It will be difficult for Alonso to field his preferred attacking lineup with Pedro Neto and the other quality options available to him.

According to Gerrard, Estevao's performance against Manchester United has given Alonso a lot to think about when making selection decisions for the future, and he has increased his chances of getting more opportunities.
