Steven Gerrard Speaks on Trent Arnold's Potential Return: ‘I’m unsure if it’s right for Liverpool

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Even though he is still unsure if it would be the best move for the club, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has stated his desire to see Trent Alexander-Arnold return to Anfield.

The former Liverpool captain thinks Alexander-Arnold can be a valuable addition to the team. He did, however, concede that the circumstances of the England international's departure may make any reunion awkward for the team, the manager, and the fans.

In 2025, Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid, a Spanish powerhouse, after leaving Liverpool. But since relocating to Spain, the 28-year-old supposedly hasn't had much luck becoming a regular starter. As a result, rumors regarding his future in the Premier League have begun to circulate.

According to recent reports, Liverpool is reportedly considering adding the defender to their roster during the January transfer window in order to bolster their defensive options.

While appearing on The Overlap, a question was posed to Gerrard regarding the possibility of Liverpool re-signing a former academy graduate. Given the player's skill on the field, the former midfielder expressed his approval of the transfer.

The situation had become more complicated due to Alexander-Arnold's decision to depart from Liverpool, which Gerrard acknowledged. Considering the sentiments of his supporters who were let down by his departure, he doubted that a reunion would be beneficial for all parties involved.

Speculation regarding the defender's future has intensified due to his struggles to secure consistent playing time at Real Madrid.

The Spanish club has bolstered their options at right back by adding Denzel Dumfries, a Dutch international. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of rivalry for the job, and neither player has seemingly established himself as the clear favorite.

According to reports, Dumfries is higher in the selection hierarchy than Alexander-Arnold, and Federico Valverde has started most of his recent matches at right back instead.

All of this has stoked rumors that Liverpool are considering a short-term deal to re-sign the England international.

Nevertheless, a January transfer is still up in the air. The Spanish club Real Madrid is hesitant to authorize a loan deal at this moment because manager Jose Mourinho allegedly isn't keen on letting players leave during the season.

Therefore, whether Real Madrid change their stance before the January transfer window could determine whether Liverpool are successful in re-signing Alexander-Arnold.
