Arsenal supporters have voiced their disappointment after William Saliba finished joint 29th in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, with several fans believing the defender deserved a much higher position following his impressive performances.
According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday, October 26, 2026, the French international’s ranking attracted criticism from Gunners supporters, with one fan expressing their frustration by describing the result as “What an embarrassment.”
Saliba was one of three Arsenal players nominated for this year’s prestigious individual award. His defensive partner Gabriel received his first nomination, while midfielder Declan Rice also secured a place on the 30-man shortlist.
The 25-year-old played a crucial role in Arsenal’s successful campaign, helping Mikel Arteta’s side win their first Premier League title in more than 20 years. He also contributed to the club’s impressive journey to their first Champions League final since 2006.
Despite his achievements, Saliba failed to break into the top 20, finishing 29th alongside former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who currently represents Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
The rankings were revealed shortly before the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, prompting widespread discussion among Arsenal supporters who felt the defender’s contribution to the club’s success had not received sufficient recognition.
The Ballon d’Or’s official website highlighted Saliba’s importance to Arsenal’s title-winning campaign, praising his physical strength, composure and defensive consistency. His performances also helped the Gunners record 26 clean sheets during the season.
The Frenchman received his second Ballon d’Or nomination, having continued to establish himself among Europe’s leading defenders. Interestingly, he grew up in Bondy, the same French town as Kylian Mbappé, with both players having been coached at AS Bondy by Mbappé’s father.
Meanwhile, Gabriel finished 21st in the final rankings, while Rice secured 15th place. This means Arsenal failed to have any representative inside the top 10 despite their successful season.
Saliba’s position has consequently raised questions among supporters about whether the voting adequately recognised his influence and contribution to Arsenal’s achievements.
