A report from Metro on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, indicates that Chelsea is exploring the possibility of signing former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. This comes after Enzo Fernández's high-profile £125 million transfer to Manchester City on deadline day.
With Fernández's exit, Chelsea is looking to strengthen their midfield and has reportedly focused on Wijnaldum, who is currently a free agent following the conclusion of his contract with Saudi Pro League team Al-Ettifaq earlier this summer.
The 35-year-old midfielder has garnered interest from multiple clubs and has reportedly engaged in talks with Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake. However, Chelsea has now reached out to the seasoned player as they consider a return to the Premier League for him.
Although the summer transfer window officially closed on Tuesday, free agents can still sign with Premier League clubs, allowing Chelsea to potentially secure Wijnaldum without incurring a transfer fee.
Wijnaldum has significant experience in the Premier League, having played for Newcastle United before becoming a key figure at Liverpool. He contributed to Liverpool's success during his time at Anfield, which included winning major trophies, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
A transfer to Chelsea could also see Wijnaldum reunite with former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who joined the London side as a free agent in August. The two midfielders, who shared several years at Liverpool, might have the chance to collaborate again at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea is anticipated to continue talks with Wijnaldum as they assess whether his experience and availability can address the void left by Fernández's departure.
