Chelsea Believe Emmanuel Emegha Can Outperform Nicolas Jackson Despite Worrying Injury Record

According to a report by Football London published on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Chelsea believe Emmanuel Emegha has the potential to become a more effective striker than Nicolas Jackson, although their respective performances highlight important questions about the club’s decision to reshape its attacking options.

Chelsea remain confident in Emegha despite his injury setbacks, while Jackson has enjoyed an impressive start at Aston Villa under manager Unai Emery. The Senegal international has scored seven goals in 11 appearances since completing a reported £65 million transfer, raising questions about whether Chelsea made the right decision by allowing him to leave Stamford Bridge.

Before his departure, Jackson recorded 30 goals and 12 assists in 81 appearances for Chelsea. However, the club decided to strengthen its forward line following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Delap subsequently struggled during the 2025/26 campaign, scoring only once in the Premier League before joining Nottingham Forest.

Emegha, who transferred from Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg in a pre-agreed deal, is yet to make his competitive debut for the London side. A hamstring injury sustained during pre-season disrupted his preparations, but manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that the Dutch striker is available for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool.

Their performances during the 2024/25 season provide some explanation for Chelsea’s confidence in the young forward. Playing for Strasbourg in France’s Ligue 1, Emegha scored 14 goals and supplied three assists in 27 appearances. Jackson, meanwhile, managed 10 goals and five assists in 30 Premier League matches for Chelsea.

Emegha also demonstrated greater efficiency in front of goal, recording a shot-conversion rate of 20.6 per cent compared with Jackson’s 13.2 per cent. His expected goals figure stood at 13.80, slightly above Jackson’s 12.30. The 6ft 4in forward also performed better in aerial duels, winning 44.8 per cent compared with Jackson’s 33.7 per cent.

Nevertheless, Jackson proved more effective when creating opportunities and taking on opponents. He registered 36 key passes and achieved a successful take-on rate of 54.8 per cent, outperforming Emegha in both areas.

Chelsea’s preference therefore appears to centre on Emegha’s finishing ability, height and physical presence rather than his overall contribution to attacking play. Alonso has expressed confidence in the striker, stating: "When he’s fit, he’s very special because he’s 1.95 metres tall; he’s quick, he attacks the space, he’s a threat."

Whether Emegha can justify Chelsea’s expectations will become clearer once he gains regular playing time and demonstrates his qualities in competitive matches.
