According to a report by Metro on November 2, 2026, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has named Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea as the three teams capable of challenging Arsenal for the Premier League title this season, despite backing Mikel Arteta’s side to retain their crown.
Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday after securing an important 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the first half as the Gunners claimed all three points in a difficult away fixture.
The victory was particularly significant because Manchester City had suffered a surprising 1-0 home defeat to Brighton, allowing Arsenal to take advantage and return to the summit of the standings.
The performance against Liverpool further convinced Gerrard that Arsenal have what it takes to win the Premier League for a second consecutive season. The former England international praised the team’s determination, organisation and ability to secure victories even when they are not at their best.
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard explained that winning difficult matches away from home could prove decisive in the title race.
He said: “Credit to Arsenal because that’s how you win leagues, going to places like Liverpool, being strong, sticking together, and putting in a different type of performance.”
Gerrard also maintained his prediction that Arsenal would finish the season as Premier League champions, insisting that their victory at Anfield could become one of the defining moments of their campaign.
He added that Liverpool still have considerable work to do if they want to challenge for the title, particularly with the nine-point gap between themselves and Arsenal at the time of his comments.
However, Gerrard believes Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea will eventually separate themselves from several other Premier League contenders as the season progresses.
He argued that the quality and depth of those three squads could make a significant difference over the demanding 38-game campaign.
Brighton, meanwhile, have impressed with their performances this season, including their memorable victory over Manchester City.
Gerrard acknowledged Fabian Hurzeler’s team’s quality and praised their fearless approach, suggesting they are serious contenders for a place in the Premier League’s top four.
Nevertheless, he does not believe Brighton have enough to sustain a title challenge until the end of the campaign.
He said: “I just think where Arsenal’s squad is, and City’s, the Liverpool squad, I just think over the course of the 38 games, the three teams, and Chelsea, when you look at Chelsea in the second half there, I think them teams will pull away a bit over the course.”
