Chelsea Star Ruled Out of Stamford Bridge Return After Summer Transfer Decision

According to a report by Football.london on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Chelsea secured Jesse Derry’s future in July, signing the 19-year-old winger to a long-term contract through 2032.

But the club’s immediate plan was for him to gain experience on loan at Sporting CP, a club known for developing young players.

So far, regular first-team football has been hard to come by. Derry has made one start, playing 73 minutes in last week’s Allianz Cup match against Marítimo.

He was an unused substitute in Sporting’s next two games against Casa Pia and Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Shakhtar fixture was played at Stamford Bridge, where the Ukrainian club are hosting their Champions League home matches this season.

Unable to play at their Donbass Arena since 2014, Shakhtar have chosen London as their temporary European base.

For Cobham graduate Derry, the match offered the unusual prospect of returning to his familiar home ground and seeing former colleagues. Instead, he watched from the bench as Sporting secured a 1–0 win.

The victory came amid a period of change for Sporting. Rui Borges has left his role, with Paulo Fonseca expected to take over after departing Lyon. Derry will hope the new manager gives him more opportunities to make an impression.

Chelsea are monitoring the winger’s progress and will want him to build valuable senior experience before returning to Cobham next summer.

Derry said after signing his new deal that staying at Chelsea was an easy decision. “It’s a dream come true to commit my future to such a big club,” he said.

“The club’s got a massive project. Everyone wants to get back to winning stuff, and I’d love to be part of that in the future.”

He made three senior appearances for Chelsea last season. Liam Rosenior handed him his debut in February, bringing him on late in a 4–0 FA Cup win over Hull City.

Derry also featured against Wrexham before making his Premier League debut under interim head coach Calum McFarlane in May.

That appearance ended painfully: Derry was stretchered off after a collision and taken to hospital with a head injury. Fortunately, the injury was not serious, and he returned to the Chelsea bench a few weeks later.
