According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday October 14, 2026, former AC Milan goalkeeping coach Luigi Turci has warned Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye that he could lose his place in Udinese’s starting lineup if he fails to improve his performances.
Okoye has come under increasing pressure following a difficult start to the campaign, having conceded 13 goals in Udinese’s opening six matches. His struggles were further highlighted in Monday’s Serie A defeat to Torino, where a costly mistake contributed to his team’s loss.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper came off his line to deal with a long pass but collided with teammate Nicolo Bertola, allowing Sandro Kulenović to capitalise and score the winning goal. Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic also criticised the goalkeeper following the incident.
However, Turci believes Okoye should not automatically be dropped as punishment for the error. He argued that the Nigerian deserves another opportunity against Lecce, provided he remains composed and receives the confidence of his goalkeeping coaches.
Turci, speaking to Messaggero Veneto, also stressed that such support cannot continue indefinitely without improved performances. He warned that Okoye must justify his position, adding that the club could replace him if he fails to provide the necessary assurances over time.
Okoye joined Udinese from Watford in August 2023 and remains under contract until June 2028. Nevertheless, his ability to retain the number-one role will depend on whether he can overcome his recent difficulties and deliver more consistent displays.
