According to Fabrizio Romano on Monday, October 26, 2026, Barcelona have confirmed that young defender Xavi Espart will be sidelined for approximately seven weeks after sustaining an injury to the syndesmosis joint in his right ankle.
The injury represents a significant setback for the youngster and another concern for manager Hansi Flick as Barcelona prepare for a demanding period of the 2026/27 campaign.
Espart picked up the injury during Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid. The defender was unable to continue after suffering a problem during the encounter, forcing the Barcelona coaching staff to make an early substitution.
Following medical examinations, the Spanish club confirmed that the youngster had sustained an injury to the syndesmosis in his right ankle, with his recovery period expected to last around seven weeks.
The development is disappointing for Espart, who has been working towards establishing himself as a regular member of Barcelona’s first team. His recent progress has demonstrated his potential and ability to compete at the highest level despite his young age.
His absence will leave Flick with another defensive problem to address, particularly as Barcelona continue to deal with fitness concerns involving other members of their backline.
During the defeat against Real Madrid, Espart was replaced by Alejandro Balde after being forced off with the injury. João Cancelo also adjusted his position as Barcelona reorganised their defence.
With a recovery period of approximately seven weeks, Espart is expected to miss several important fixtures in domestic and European competitions. His actual return date will depend on his response to treatment and rehabilitation.
Barcelona are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with the youngster’s recovery, as rushing him back before he is fully fit could potentially worsen the problem.
For now, Espart’s priority will be to complete his rehabilitation and regain the fitness required to return to competitive action.
His injury comes at an unfortunate time for Barcelona, with Flick needing as many available defensive options as possible to navigate the busy fixture schedule.
The club will therefore hope that the youngster makes a smooth recovery and returns to the squad without further complications.
