According to a report by Football London on Friday October 16, 2026, Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has named Viktor Gyokeres as the club’s biggest loser, highlighting the Swedish forward’s fiercely competitive personality within Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Arteta has built a determined, winning culture at Arsenal, helping the Gunners capture the Premier League title during the 2025/26 campaign. Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bukayo Saka are among those known for their competitive spirit.
However, when asked which teammate struggles most with defeat, Calafiori offered an unexpected answer, suggesting Gyokeres could be particularly difficult to console after disappointing results.
Arsenal recruited Gyokeres from Sporting CP in 2025 for £55 million, alongside additional bonuses. The striker made an immediate impact, scoring more than 20 goals across competitions and contributing significantly to the club’s successful previous season.
His performances have attracted mixed reactions, though, and the forward has encountered difficulties during the current campaign. Kai Havertz has moved ahead of him in Arteta’s selection, limiting Gyokeres’ opportunities to start.
The Swedish international began matches against Ipswich Town, Napoli and Lille but failed to find the net in those appearances. Although Arsenal won those games, his personal frustration may have been considerable.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Calafiori acknowledged that he also dislikes losing before identifying Gyokeres as another particularly competitive teammate.
“That’s not an easy one! I think I’m on that list, but for sure there are a couple worse than me as well. I think maybe Viktor Gyokeres as well. I’ll say him,” Calafiori explained.
Gyokeres has enjoyed considerable success recently, winning league championships in each of his previous three seasons, including two with Sporting and one with Arsenal.
Nevertheless, his place in Arteta’s starting lineup remains uncertain. He must demonstrate his quality whenever opportunities arise, particularly if he hopes to establish himself as Arsenal’s leading striker.
With competition increasing, Gyokeres faces an important period. Consistent performances and goals could strengthen his position, while continued struggles may raise questions about his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.
