How Former Arsenal Star Became A Billionaire After Quitting Football And Changing Careers

Former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has revealed how his business ambitions during his playing career helped him build a huge fortune outside football.

According to a report by Football London on Thursday, 15 October 2026, Flamini co-founded GF Biochemicals in 2013 while playing for AC Milan. The company specialises in producing levulinic acid, which has applications in developing more sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based products.

The 42-year-old enjoyed a successful career at Arsenal, winning three FA Cups across two spells at the club. He also featured in the 2006 Champions League final after joining the Gunners from Marseille in 2004.

However, Flamini was already preparing for life beyond football while still competing professionally. His interest in environmental sustainability, which began during childhood, eventually inspired him to establish the business.

The former France international explained that his approach to spending his free time during his playing days helped him develop his knowledge and build the company alongside his football commitments.

"From a very young age, I had the opportunity to understand the negative impact humans have on the planet," Flamini told L'Express.

Rather than spending all his spare time on leisure activities, he chose to learn about business and environmental issues while balancing training sessions and matches.

Building the company required significant personal development, particularly as chemistry and English were not subjects he had particularly enjoyed at school.

"I had to educate myself, be extremely curious, and surround myself with the right people," he explained.

GF Biochemicals has reportedly been valued at more than £10 billion, although this figure does not necessarily represent Flamini's personal wealth.

Flamini retired from professional football in 2020 but believes the skills he developed on the pitch have helped him succeed in business.

He highlighted discipline, teamwork and the ability to manage pressure as important qualities in both professions.
