According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Xabi Alonso finally handed Estevao his first Premier League start against Manchester United and the young Brazilian made the most of the opportunity.
The decision delighted Chelsea supporters, including Joe Cole’s son, Harry. Cole told The Dressing Room podcast that he interviewed Alonso before the match and brought Harry along during the school half-term.
His son’s first question for the Chelsea manager was about Estevao. The teenager started the following day.
Estevao produced an impressive display, though he was unlucky not to score after having two goals ruled out. Alonso gave him a warm embrace when he was substituted.
The winger was not flawless. In one first-half chance, he shot straight at goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead of passing to a teammate, leaving Josh Acheampong with little support. But his energy and willingness to attack stood out.
Steven Gerrard praised Estevao on The Overlap Daily, saying Liverpool could use a player with his directness.
He particularly admired the teenager’s instinct to take on defenders and shoot, contrasting it with what he sees as Liverpool’s tendency to look for an extra pass.
“Estevao is really exciting,” Gerrard said. “He’s got flair and quality, and I love how direct he is. He’s hungry to get shots away.”
Gerrard also pointed to a moment when Estevao might have slowed down and passed, but chose to drive forward instead. That boldness, he said, is part of what makes the winger so entertaining.
Estevao could get another chance this weekend when Chelsea travel to Sunderland, with Joao Pedro expected to remain unavailable. But Pedro’s return may leave Alonso with a difficult choice.
With Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Pedro among the attacking options, Alonso may have to choose between Estevao and Pedro Neto for the remaining spot in his front four.
Gerrard believes the competition will be a genuine challenge for the Chelsea manager. “Neto is a great player, but you can’t fit five into a front four,” he said. “Estevao has certainly done himself no harm.”
For now, Alonso’s decision may be straightforward. Once Pedro is fit again, however, whether Estevao keeps his place or Neto returns to the right wing will be worth watching.
