Former Real Madrid star reveals what Cristiano Ronaldo used to tell him before big UCL games

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Carvajal reflected on his experiences playing alongside Ronaldo during their successful years at Real Madrid. The Spanish defender explained how the former Manchester United star encouraged him to deliver crosses into dangerous areas, assuring him that he would be available to finish the chances.

Speaking in an interview with AS, Carvajal recalled Ronaldo’s encouraging words before attacking situations. “Look, when you get there, you put it anywhere, I'll be right there,” the defender remembered the five-time Ballon d'Or winner telling him.

Carvajal explained that Ronaldo’s confidence made it easier for him to attempt crosses against different opponents because he trusted the forward’s ability to anticipate the ball and position himself effectively inside the penalty area. Ronaldo’s movement and determination often made him a constant threat to opposing defenders.

The former Real Madrid defender also praised Ronaldo’s exceptional instincts in front of goal, describing him as “so imposing... a predator in the box.” According to Carvajal, the Portuguese international possessed the qualities required to deliver outstanding performances when the pressure was highest.

Carvajal also expressed his belief that Ronaldo would eventually reach 1,000 career goals, a milestone that would further strengthen his status among football’s greatest players.

“That guy is going to reach 1,000 goals, for sure. And he deserves it. He is the embodiment of discipline, of perseverance,” Carvajal stated, pointing to the forward’s dedication and consistency throughout his career.

The Spanish defender further urged football supporters to remember Ronaldo’s extraordinary performances during his peak years at Real Madrid instead of judging him primarily by the later stages of his playing career.

“People tend to remember him from his last years. Anyone who hasn't seen Cristiano here at Real Madrid, especially... he was incredible,” Carvajal added.

Carvajal made 451 appearances for Real Madrid and won six Champions League titles, sharing four European triumphs with Ronaldo in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 and left for Juventus in 2018 after establishing himself as one of the Spanish club’s most prolific goalscorers. Carvajal has since joined Getafe as a free agent following the expiration of his Real Madrid contract, signing an agreement that runs until the end of the season.
