Lisandro Martinez has issued a public statement following his criticism of Manchester United's hierarchy after their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, insisting that his comments reflected his desire to see the club compete for major honours.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, 15 October 2026, the Argentine defender addressed the controversy surrounding his post-match interview, amid uncertainty over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Martinez reportedly criticised the club's lack of investment during the summer transfer window following Tuesday's defeat.
His comments have raised questions about his relationship with the club's leadership, with reports suggesting that his contract situation remains unresolved.
According to the report, football director Jason Wilcox is expected to remain in his position, while Martinez's current deal is due to expire next summer. Manchester United have the option to extend his contract by another 12 months.
The defender subsequently took to Instagram to explain his remarks, acknowledging that frustration had influenced his reaction without withdrawing his criticism.
"After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted," Martinez wrote.
He explained that his comments were motivated by his determination to restore Manchester United to the highest level of European football.
"My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours. Those high standards are part of how I see football and the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt," he added.
Martinez also accepted that the players must take responsibility for the team's disappointing results, stressing the importance of collective effort in improving the club's performances.
"I know that, first and foremost, it's us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility," he stated.
The Argentine further expressed confidence in his teammates and head coach Michael Carrick, despite United's recent struggles.
"I believe in my teammates, our manager and everyone working to help this club move forward. I'm convinced that the way forward is to keep working together, with ambition and commitment," Martinez said.
Manchester United have now gone five matches without a victory across all competitions, increasing pressure on Carrick ahead of Sunday's Premier League encounter against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Red Devils are seeking their first league victory since August, making the upcoming fixture increasingly important for the manager and his squad.
