Real Madrid are reportedly considering Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a potential long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois as the Spanish club begins planning for the future of its goalkeeping department.
According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners have identified the 24-year-old Netherlands international as one of their possible options to succeed Courtois, whose contract at the Santiago Bernabeu is scheduled to expire in 2027.
Verbruggen has attracted attention through his impressive performances in the English Premier League, particularly following Brighton's recent 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on October 31.
The Dutch shot-stopper produces an outstanding performance, recording seven saves to prevent Pep Guardiola's team from finding the net despite creating several dangerous opportunities throughout the encounter. His contribution played a significant role in Brighton's impressive result against the Premier League giants.
His performances have continued to demonstrate his excellent reflexes, positioning and ability to remain composed under pressure. These qualities have reportedly placed him on Real Madrid's radar as they assess potential candidates for the future.
Verbruggen joined Brighton from Belgian club Anderlecht in 2023 and has progressively established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper. His development has also earned him regular involvement with the Netherlands national team.
Real Madrid are reportedly examining several aspects of his game, including his shot-stopping ability, distribution and confidence in possession. These attributes are considered important for a club that expects its goalkeepers to contribute to building attacks from the back.
Meanwhile, 34-year-old Courtois remains Madrid's preferred goalkeeper and continues to play an important role in the team managed by Jose Mourinho. However, his contract situation has encouraged the club to consider possible alternatives.
Although discussions over a contract extension are reportedly ongoing, Madrid have yet to make an official approach for Verbruggen.
For now, the Brighton goalkeeper remains a reported target as Real Madrid assess their options ahead of a possible transition after Courtois.
