According to a report by Metro on Friday, October 23, 2026, Antonio Conte has held discussions with Manchester United over the possibility of replacing Michael Carrick as manager, but the Italian coach has reportedly outlined two major conditions before accepting the position at Old Trafford.
Carrick is facing growing pressure after Manchester United endured a disappointing beginning to the season. The club have managed only two victories from their opening 11 matches across all competitions, raising concerns about the team’s performances and the manager’s ability to turn their fortunes around.
United’s situation worsened following their 4-0 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result has intensified speculation about Carrick’s future, although the former midfielder is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth.
According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Conte is interested in returning to English football and has reportedly spoken with senior Manchester United officials about the possibility of becoming their next permanent manager.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur boss is said to want complete authority over the club’s transfer activities. This would allow him to identify and recruit players during the January transfer window and the following summer, ensuring the squad is strengthened according to his preferred tactical approach.
Conte also reportedly wants full control over decisions concerning the current squad, including determining which players remain part of his plans and which could be allowed to leave. Additionally, the Italian manager is keen to bring his own trusted coaching staff if he eventually takes charge at Old Trafford.
However, financial demands could present a significant obstacle to negotiations. According to The Times, Conte could seek an annual salary exceeding £10 million, potentially making an agreement more complicated for Manchester United’s leadership.
There are also concerns within the club about Conte’s demanding personality and confrontational approach, which reportedly contributed to strained relationships during his previous managerial spells at Chelsea and Tottenham.
Despite these reservations, his impressive record of winning major trophies makes him an appealing candidate. Conte won the Premier League title with Chelsea during his first season and also secured Serie A championships in his debut campaigns with Juventus and Napoli.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly examining alternative candidates, including Eddie Howe and former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann. Unai Emery and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler are also admired by the club’s hierarchy.
For now, Carrick is expected to lead United against Bournemouth, with the result potentially influencing the club’s decision as uncertainty surrounding his managerial future continues to grow.
