Manchester United are facing renewed questions over their decision to retain Michael Carrick as manager, with Marco Silva emerging as a potential alternative who could have offered the club greater stability and possibly helped them avoid the expenses associated with another managerial change.
According to a report by GiveMeSport on October 17, 2026, United’s difficult start to the Premier League campaign has intensified scrutiny of their managerial decisions, particularly as Carrick struggles to deliver consistent results.
The Red Devils have reportedly managed just one victory in their opening league fixtures, raising concerns about their performances and the club’s decision to continue with the former midfielder. Their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid has added to the pressure ahead of their challenging trip to Leeds United.
Carrick enjoyed an impressive period last season, but his recent difficulties have reignited debate about Manchester United’s tendency to appoint former players in the hope of restoring the club’s fortunes. Previous appointments, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, have contributed to discussions about whether familiarity with the club is enough to guarantee success.
Marco Silva was reportedly among the managers United could have considered during the summer. The Portuguese coach left Fulham after an encouraging spell in the Premier League before taking charge of Benfica, where he has reportedly made a promising start.
Silva brings considerable experience from managing several English clubs, including Fulham, Everton, Watford and Hull City. His familiarity with the Premier League could have made him an attractive candidate for a club seeking tactical consistency and improved performances.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola previously praised Silva’s managerial qualities, expressing confidence in his potential to become one of football’s leading coaches.
“Marco is one of the top, top, top managers I face. Destined to be one of the top in a few years for sure,” Guardiola said in February.
According to the report, Silva recorded 12 victories in his first 16 matches at Benfica, losing only twice during that period. Those results have strengthened arguments that United may have overlooked a credible candidate.
Meanwhile, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has reportedly emerged as another possible option should Manchester United decide to replace Carrick.
Another managerial appointment could bring additional compensation payments and recruitment expenses. However, Silva’s performances elsewhere do not guarantee he would have achieved similar results at Old Trafford, leaving United’s decision a subject of continuing debate.
