According to a report by Football Transfer on Sunday October 18, 2026, Chelsea have received a major boost after retaining highly rated defender Josh Acheampong, who attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs during the summer transfer window.
The England Under-21 international is considered one of the most promising young defenders in his position. Since breaking into Chelsea’s senior team under Mauricio Pochettino, questions about his long-term future have continued to emerge.
Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain were reportedly monitoring Acheampong’s situation. However, new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is understood to have met with the defender’s representatives before the season began, assuring them that the youngster would play an important role in his plans.
After making only eight Premier League starts last season, uncertainty surrounded Acheampong’s prospects under Alonso. Those concerns have quickly faded, with the defender enjoying increased opportunities during the opening weeks of the 2026-27 campaign.
Acheampong has started six of Chelsea’s nine matches across all competitions this season. He also completed the full 90 minutes in recent league victories against Bournemouth and Everton, helping the Blues secure consecutive wins.
Chelsea defeated Bournemouth 5-1 before recording a 2-0 triumph over Everton. The latter result delivered their first clean sheet of the campaign, highlighting improvements in the team’s defensive organisation.
Speaking after the Everton victory, Alonso praised his players’ performance, describing the result as professional and solid. He added that the team demonstrated maturity, controlled important periods and created opportunities while limiting the opposition’s threat.
Acheampong has also impressed individually, particularly with his defensive work against Jack Grealish and former Chelsea teammate Tyrique George. His ability to defend one-on-one situations, maintain possession and carry the ball forward has strengthened his position in Alonso’s preferred starting lineup.
At just 20, the defender still has considerable room to develop, making his progress especially encouraging for Chelsea. His performances suggest he could become a key figure in the club’s long-term plans.
Having previously risked losing the youngster, Chelsea will be encouraged by his development. Discussions over a new long-term contract have reportedly begun, potentially securing Acheampong’s future at Stamford Bridge and discouraging further interest from rival clubs.
