BRE 1-2 LIV: Match Review And Updated English Premier League Table

According to a report published by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Liverpool claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford after recovering from a first-half deficit in their Premier League meeting. Brentford finished the encounter with nine men after Yehor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt were sent off.

The result ended Brentford's unbeaten run at the beginning of the league campaign and enabled Liverpool to move above them in the standings following an entertaining contest.

The two sides struggled to produce clear chances during the first 20 minutes, although Brentford gradually improved their attacking play. Michael Kayode almost gave the hosts the lead, but Jeremy Jacquet managed to deflect his effort just wide of the goal.

Liverpool responded with a dangerous break after the resulting corner, but Bradley Barcola failed to take advantage of a one-on-one situation against Caoimhin Kelleher, dragging his shot wide. Brentford's Igor Thiago subsequently threatened to score, but Jacquet again intervened to prevent the opportunity from becoming a goal.

Brentford eventually broke the deadlock shortly before half-time. In the 44th minute, Thiago sent a well-placed cross into the box, and Keane Lewis-Potter stretched to connect with the delivery and beat Alisson Becker, putting the home side ahead.

However, the hosts suffered a significant setback during first-half stoppage time when Yarmolyuk received a straight red card. The midfielder was dismissed after directing his head towards Jacquet during an altercation, forcing Brentford to continue with 10 players.

Although they were a man down, Brentford defended resolutely after the restart and continued looking for opportunities on the counterattack. Thiago also found himself involved in another controversial incident early in the second half after an apparent elbow on Jacquet, but the referee showed him only a yellow card.

Liverpool responded by increasing their attacking intensity in search of a way back into the match. Mac Allister demonstrated his individual quality by dribbling past several challenges before testing Kelleher with a well-struck effort.

The visitors eventually restored parity through Victor Munoz. The Liverpool forward cut inside and calmly guided his shot into the corner, bringing the score to 1-1 and giving his team renewed momentum.

Liverpool then completed the turnaround when Alexander Isak controlled the ball despite pressure from Brentford's defenders before finishing confidently beyond Kelleher to make it 2-1.

Brentford continued searching for an equaliser, but Thiago squandered a good opportunity from close range. Liverpool nearly increased their lead when Barcola struck the crossbar while attempting to score a third goal.

The home side's chances of earning a late point diminished further in stoppage time when Janelt was shown a second yellow card for halting a promising Liverpool counterattack. The dismissal left Brentford with only nine players for the closing moments.

Liverpool held on to secure a valuable victory, completing an impressive comeback against a Brentford side whose hopes were undermined by two costly dismissals.
