According to a report published by Evening Standard on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Xabi Alonso guided Chelsea to a significant 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, marking an important step forward for the club as they ended their disappointing run of Premier League away results in northern England.
A second-half brace from Pedro Neto secured all three points for the Blues, moving them above Everton and into fourth place in the league table, although their position remained subject to other results.
The victory carried particular importance because Chelsea had gone more than four years without winning a league match in northern England. Their previous success against a prominent northern club had occurred in August 2022.
Chelsea's recent record at Everton had also been disappointing. Before this encounter, the London club had managed just two goals in their previous nine visits to face the Toffees, underlining their struggles at the venue.
This time, however, Alonso's team showed greater aggression, determination and tactical discipline, suggesting that the Spanish manager is making progress in improving their performances.
The visitors collected four yellow cards within the opening 34 minutes as both teams competed fiercely during the first half. Despite facing difficult moments against Everton, Chelsea remained organised and eventually created the breakthrough they needed.
Neto put Chelsea ahead only 44 seconds after the interval, taking his opportunity well and forcing Everton to chase the game.
He later scored his second goal shortly before the end of normal time, completing his brace and confirming Chelsea's victory. His performance meant the Blues did not need goals from other attacking players, such as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers or Joao Pedro, to secure the result.
Beyond the three points, Chelsea also achieved a notable defensive milestone by keeping their first clean sheet in the Premier League in nine months.
Their defensive resolve was challenged when goalkeeper Emi Martinez sustained a serious injury in an accidental collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentine was stretchered off and taken to hospital for further assessment.
Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders came on in the 75th minute to replace Martinez, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to represent Chelsea in a Premier League match. The 21-year-old responded confidently to the pressure, including clearing a free-kick with a punch as his team defended its lead.
The performance suggested that Alonso is successfully working to correct Chelsea's weaknesses in difficult away games. The Blues combined defensive discipline, physical commitment and clinical attacking play to overcome Everton rather than allowing the hosts to dictate the match.
Ultimately, the victory brought an end to Chelsea's lengthy period of disappointment in northern England, strengthened their position in the league standings and highlighted the progress they are making under Alonso's leadership.
