According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday October 17, 2026, João Cancelo is strengthening his case for a more prominent role at Barcelona after producing an impressive performance against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

According to reports, the Portuguese defender caught the attention of Galatasaray’s players during Barcelona’s 4-1 victory in Istanbul, with his display highlighting the attacking qualities he brings to Hansi Flick’s team.

Cancelo played an important role in the match after Barcelona fell behind, scoring the equaliser before half-time to help the Catalan side regain momentum. His finish proved to be a significant contribution as the visitors recovered from a difficult start to secure an emphatic victory.

The performance also comes at an important time for the 31-year-old, who is competing with young academy graduate Xavi Espart for opportunities in Barcelona’s defensive positions. Espart has earned chances under Flick, creating greater competition for places in the squad.

However, Cancelo has responded with convincing performances, demonstrating why his experience and versatility remain valuable to the team. The Portuguese international is comfortable operating in advanced positions, carrying the ball forward and creating passing options in the final third.

His technical ability allows Barcelona to move through tight spaces and put pressure on opponents who defend deep. Cancelo can also arrive in scoring positions, giving Flick an additional attacking threat from defence.

His recent goalscoring form has further strengthened his position, with the defender also finding the net against Racing Santander and scoring for Portugal during the recent run of fixtures.

For Barcelona, Cancelo’s resurgence provides Flick with another useful option as the team navigates a demanding schedule. His ability to contribute in attack while fulfilling his defensive responsibilities could prove important in the club’s pursuit of success across competitions.
