According to a report by The Athletic on Friday, October 30, 2026, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has revealed that he is still playing with pain from a broken finger he sustained before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, after deciding against surgery to remain available for the tournament.
The goalkeeper said the injury has permanently affected his finger, with the bone remaining out of its normal position and unlikely to return to its original condition.
Martinez explained that he chose to manage the injury rather than undergo surgery because he wanted to represent Argentina at the World Cup, where he played a crucial role in the country's successful campaign.
The Aston Villa shot-stopper admitted that the pain from the finger injury was considerably worse than what he is currently experiencing following a separate injury that has left him sidelined with a broken jaw.
According to Martinez, his latest injury does not compare with the discomfort he endured while playing through the finger problem during the international tournament.
His decision to avoid surgery at the time allowed him to remain available for Argentina as the South American nation pursued its World Cup ambition.
Martinez was instrumental in Argentina's triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, producing important saves during the knockout stages and the final against France.
He also made a decisive contribution during the penalty shootout in the final, helping Argentina secure its third World Cup title.
