According to a report by Evening Standard on Friday, October 30, 2026, Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino is expected to remain sidelined for several more weeks as he continues his recovery from a series of injuries.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that the 21-year-old Argentine is not yet ready to return to action ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Anselmino has endured a difficult period with injuries throughout 2026, limiting his opportunities to establish himself at Chelsea since joining the club from Boca Juniors for a reported £17 million in August 2024.
The defender is yet to make his Premier League debut for the Blues, with his only competitive first-team appearance coming during the Club World Cup last year. He featured for just two minutes against Benfica in the round of 16 after replacing Levi Colwill.
Following the competition, Anselmino joined Borussia Dortmund on loan before being recalled in January and subsequently sent to Strasbourg for the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. However, injuries restricted his involvement in France, where he managed just three appearances.
His latest fitness setback came during Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Johor Darul Ta'zim in August, when he was forced off shortly before the half-hour mark.
Although he recovered sufficiently to make the matchday squad for the Carabao Cup second-round victory over Luton, he has not featured for the first team since then.
Providing an update on the defender, Alonso explained that Chelsea would not rush his recovery because of his recent injury problems. The Spanish manager stressed that Anselmino still needs several weeks to regain full fitness and that the club must exercise caution before allowing him to return.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have received more encouraging news regarding goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who is recovering from surgery after suffering a broken jaw against Everton. The Argentina international was initially expected to spend up to six weeks on the sidelines but could return ahead of schedule.
Alonso revealed that Martinez has a chance of being available for Chelsea’s Premier League encounter against Sunderland before the November international break, although his condition will be assessed next week.
The Chelsea manager also indicated that the 34-year-old would probably need to wear a protective face mask if he returns to action. Martinez's potential comeback would provide Chelsea with an additional goalkeeping option, while Anselmino will continue his rehabilitation as he targets a return to full fitness.
