Barcelona are reportedly considering a January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie as sporting director Deco looks to strengthen the club’s defence following a series of injury setbacks.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Ecuadorian international has emerged as one of the leading names on Barcelona’s shortlist ahead of the winter transfer window.
The Spanish giants are keen to add defensive reinforcements after injuries disrupted their backline, with Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Xavi Espart and Andreas Christensen all experiencing fitness problems.
The situation has left manager Hansi Flick with limited defensive options, prompting the club to explore potential additions when the January transfer window opens.
Hincapie is reportedly among the players Barcelona are closely monitoring. The 24-year-old has struggled to secure regular minutes since joining Arsenal, managing just over 250 minutes of competitive football this season.
Competition for places in Mikel Arteta’s defence has been particularly strong, with William Saliba, Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori all competing for opportunities.
Barcelona have reportedly taken an interest in his situation, with Deco already contacting the defender’s representatives to discuss the possibility of a January move.
One of the biggest attractions is Hincapie’s ability to operate in multiple defensive positions. The former Bayer Leverkusen player is comfortable at both centre-back and left-back, making him an attractive option for Flick.
His preference for using his left foot and his ability to help build attacks from the back could also make him a suitable defensive partner for young centre-back Pau Cubarsi.
Furthermore, Barcelona could benefit from his versatility if Alejandro Balde eventually departs, as the Ecuadorian would provide additional competition and cover at left-back.
However, securing his services could prove difficult because Arsenal are unlikely to make negotiations straightforward.
Arteta reportedly considers Hincapie an important part of his defensive plans and may be reluctant to approve his departure, particularly with several major competitions still underway.
The defender is also under contract at the Emirates Stadium until 2031, giving Arsenal considerable control over his future and a strong position in any potential negotiations.
Consequently, Barcelona may need to make a substantial financial offer if they want to convince Arsenal to consider selling the Ecuadorian during the January transfer window.
