According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Thursday October 29, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly considering a January transfer move for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, potentially giving the Premier League club an opportunity to sell him before his contract expires.
Martinez has recently attracted criticism following his public comments about Manchester United’s leadership earlier this month, creating fresh uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at Old Trafford.
The Argentine international openly questioned director of football Jason Wilcox after United suffered a 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, expressing concerns about the club’s direction.
“I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest,” Martinez said, raising questions about whether manager Michael Carrick had received adequate support from the club’s hierarchy.
His remarks generated considerable backlash, eventually prompting the defender to release a statement explaining his frustrations. Nevertheless, Martinez remains an important member of United’s squad despite the controversy.
Manchester United signed the 28-year-old from Ajax in 2022 for approximately £49 million, and he quickly established himself as an aggressive, technically accomplished central defender.
Although Martinez stands just 5ft 9in tall, his intelligent positioning, anticipation and determination allow him to compete effectively against physically imposing opponents.
His impressive left-footed distribution helps United build attacks from defence, while his versatility also allows him to operate in defensive midfield when necessary.
However, recurring fitness problems have interrupted his progress, including a serious cruciate ligament injury suffered in February 2025. United have continued experiencing defensive difficulties this season.
Michael Carrick’s team currently sit 16th in the Premier League, increasing pressure on the manager as questions emerge about potential changes within the squad.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have identified Martinez as a possible defensive addition during the January transfer window as they seek improvements following consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Those disappointing results exposed weaknesses in Barcelona’s defence, encouraging manager Hansi Flick to consider strengthening his options ahead of the season’s second half.
Martinez could represent an attainable target because his current Manchester United contract expires in June 2027, although the club reportedly possess an option to extend it until 2028.
His recent criticism of United’s leadership could complicate negotiations, while his injury record may also influence Barcelona’s decision regarding a potential transfer.
Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol, Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and Real Betis centre-back Natan are reportedly among Barcelona’s other defensive targets.
Barcelona’s interest comes after Manchester United recently blocked the departure of academy prospect JJ Gabriel, although no formal offer for Martinez has been reported.
For now, United have not indicated any willingness to sell the Argentine defender, leaving his future unresolved ahead of the January transfer window.
