According to a report by Football London published on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the former Liverpool captain attracted criticism from sections of the Reds fanbase after tapping the Chelsea badge on his shirt during his new club’s emphatic 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth earlier this month.
Henderson, who joined Chelsea on a free transfer during the summer after leaving Brentford, delivered an impressive performance by scoring twice. One of his goals came from a superb free-kick that curled into the top-right corner, highlighting his continued ability to influence matches at the age of 36.
However, it was his celebration rather than his performance that attracted significant attention. By tapping the Chelsea badge, Henderson appeared to express his commitment to his new employers, a gesture that received contrasting reactions from supporters of both clubs.
The midfielder spent 12 years at Liverpool, serving as captain during the successful period under Jurgen Klopp. During his time at Anfield, he helped the club win several major trophies, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cup titles. His contributions established him as an important figure in Liverpool’s recent history.
Despite that legacy, some Liverpool supporters believe his latest actions were unnecessary. One fan account criticised him, writing: "Jordan Henderson tapped on the Chelsea badge twice, yeah, he's a rat."
Another supporter expressed similar disappointment, stating: "His behaviour tapping the badge like the club means the world to him is exactly why people don't like Jordan Henderson."
A third fan also voiced dissatisfaction, declaring: "I will never respect this Jordan Henderson guy," while other supporters suggested that the midfielder had become carried away during his celebration.
Chelsea fans, however, welcomed the gesture, interpreting it as evidence of his loyalty to the London club. One supporter reacted by saying, "Bro even tapped the badge," before adding: "Proper Chels right there." Another fan even suggested Henderson could eventually become Chelsea captain.
The controversy has added extra tension to Wednesday’s encounter, with Henderson potentially facing an uncomfortable reception if selected by Xabi Alonso.
Liverpool will seek a fifth consecutive victory, while Chelsea will hope to recover from their 2-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
