According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday, October 15, 2026, former France international Marcel Desailly has advised Real Madrid to consider selling Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, suggesting that a transfer could benefit both the player and the Spanish club.
Vinicius recently committed his future to Madrid by signing a long-term contract. However, concerns have reportedly emerged over his recent performances and his place in Jose Mourinho’s plans. His dismissal against Villarreal, which reports say has led to a four-match La Liga suspension, has further intensified scrutiny of the 26-year-old attacker.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Desailly questioned whether Madrid should continue building their attacking strategy around Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe. He believes the partnership between the two forwards has not delivered the expected results, raising doubts about whether they can consistently perform effectively together.
“I think Real Madrid should have let Vinicius leave. They need to look for other players,” Desailly said.
The former defender also suggested that moving to another club could give Vinicius an opportunity to escape the criticism surrounding his performances. At the same time, Madrid would have the chance to identify alternative attacking options and reshape their forward line.
Nevertheless, selling Vinicius would represent a significant decision for the European giants. The Brazilian remains one of football’s most threatening dribblers and has demonstrated his ability to deliver on the biggest stage. His goals in two Champions League finals have helped establish his importance to Madrid’s recent European achievements.
One of the major challenges facing Mourinho is the similarity between Vinicius and Mbappe’s preferred positions. Both players are most comfortable operating from the left side of the attack, creating a tactical dilemma over how to accommodate their strengths without limiting either player’s influence.
Madrid’s difficulties have not been restricted to their forward line, as problems in midfield have also contributed to their inconsistent performances. Consequently, blaming Vinicius alone for the team’s struggles could overlook wider issues affecting the squad.
Desailly’s comments have therefore raised an important question about Madrid’s attacking future. The club must decide whether selling Vinicius would be the best solution or whether Mourinho can make tactical adjustments to improve the partnership between the Brazilian and Mbappe.
For now, Vinicius remains a Madrid player, and any decision about his future will depend on the club’s assessment of his performances, tactical fit and long-term plans.
