According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday November 5, 2026, former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has launched a scathing criticism of Vinicius Junior, questioning whether the Brazilian winger is doing enough to justify his status at the Spanish giants.

Vinicius has come under increasing scrutiny following his recent performances, with several former footballers expressing concerns about his declining influence and effectiveness in Real Madrid's attack.

Canizares believes the winger's disappointment at missing out on the 2024 Ballon d'Or has played a significant role in the situation, while also questioning Real Madrid's reaction to the award result.

Speaking on Movistar Plus Deportes' La Casa del Fútbol, the former goalkeeper argued that the club's decision to boycott the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris contributed to the expectations and status surrounding Vinicius.

"What has hit Vinicius the hardest is missing out on that Ballon d’Or and finding himself in a situation where a club bends to his will and does not travel to the Ballon d’Or ceremony," Canizares said.

Real Madrid refused to attend the ceremony after learning that Vinicius would not receive the award, which eventually went to Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Canizares believes the club's public support of the Brazilian following the disappointment has influenced how he views his position within the team.

"These are things that don’t come naturally, and now Vini thinks he has a certain status, which he does have contractually," he added.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper also brought manager Jose Mourinho into the discussion, suggesting that the Portuguese has repeatedly been required to defend Vinicius during press conferences.

"Now Mourinho has to step in to defend Vinicius at every press conference," he said.

However, Canizares reserved his strongest criticism for the Brazilian's performances, insisting that his reputation and contractual standing must be matched by his contributions on the pitch.

"Vinicius is incapable of justifying that status on the pitch," he concluded.

The criticism adds to the growing pressure surrounding Vinicius, who is facing questions about his form and place in Mourinho's starting lineup.

Former Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti and ex-Real Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic have also questioned the winger's recent performances, with Mijatovic pointing to the emergence of Yan Diomande as increased competition for the Brazilian's position.

Vinicius will now be expected to respond on the pitch and demonstrate why he remains such an important figure at Real Madrid.
