According to a report from the London Evening Standard on Friday October 16, 2026, Chelsea captain Reece James is set to miss 22 matches following knee surgery with the defender expected to be sidelined for around three months.
The injury is another major blow for the England international after another setback in his recovery from a previous injury.
James was surprisingly absent from the Blues’ match against Bournemouth last weekend after picking up a knee complaint during training. Head coach Xabi Alonso initially suggested the problem was a minor one, but it was worse than expected.
The club revealed on Friday morning that the 26-year-old had undergone surgery to deal with the issue. He is set to be out of action for ‘until the end of January,’ according to the Evening Standard.
Considering the defender’s injury history, Chelsea are expected to take things slowly with James, meaning his absence could have a major impact on their campaign as they attempt to cope with a busy schedule.
Already missing from the 5-1 win over Bournemouth on October 10, James is set to miss their upcoming Premier League fixtures against Everton, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City.
They could also face a huge blow in their domestic campaign as they prepare to face Liverpool this month in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. James is expected to miss the visit to Anfield, and potentially beyond if the Blues progress to the fifth round and the semi-finals, with the first leg of the last four also due to take place in January.
He is also expected to miss the FA Cup third round in January, which will come after a series of other games. Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are due to visit Stamford Bridge while the Blues also have Sunderland, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Newcastle.
Alonso will need to manage his resources as his side attempt to compete across competitions at the turn of the year.James’ return to action is expected to come in late January as the head coach looks to plot a route back to full fitness.
