Chelsea midfielder Valentin Barco has identified his Argentine compatriot Nico Paz as a potential successor to Lionel Messi's iconic number 10 shirt, expressing his desire to see the Como midfielder become the next player to carry the prestigious jersey for the national team.
According to a report by The Athletic on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Barco praised Paz's footballing qualities, describing him as a complete player with the ability to make a significant contribution to Argentina's future.
The 22-year-old Paz has attracted growing attention following his impressive performances for Italian side Como under the guidance of former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas. His creativity, technical ability and attacking contributions have reportedly placed him on the radar of several European clubs, including Chelsea.
The Premier League side are understood to have sent scouts to monitor him during Como's Champions League defeat to Feyenoord and their Serie A encounter against Fiorentina, where he scored and provided an assist.
Paz continued his impressive form against Torino with another goal and assist before recording three goal contributions in Como's 9-1 victory over Lens.
Chelsea are reportedly considering a transfer, although a January move is considered unlikely. Real Madrid also have a reported £70 million buyback clause, while Chelsea could consider an offer worth approximately £100 million.
Barco, who shared accommodation with Paz during the 2026 World Cup, was asked about young Argentine players capable of making an impact internationally.
He responded: “Nico, maybe. Nico is very, very good. He’s very well-rounded in every way. Personally, I really like his playing style.”
On whether Paz could eventually inherit Messi's number 10 shirt, Barco added: “I really hope so. I would love to see it. I shared a room with him at the World Cup; we spent more than 50 days together, and in a few training camps. We know each other’s journeys. I hope he can wear it.”
Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez has also expressed support for Paz potentially taking on the responsibility.
Meanwhile, Paz's reported average of 2.68 chances created per 90 minutes this season has further strengthened his reputation as one of Argentina's exciting attacking prospects.
