According to a report by Metro on Monday, November 2, 2026, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has admitted that his former club should have signed Arsenal centre-back Ezri Konsa before his £55 million transfer from Aston Villa.
Konsa has made an impressive start to life at the Emirates Stadium since completing his move during the summer transfer window, establishing himself as an important member of Mikel Arteta's squad.
The 29-year-old immediately benefited from William Saliba's injury absence, earning a place in Arsenal's starting lineup and helping the Gunners record 13 victories in their first 16 matches across all competitions.
His latest impressive performance came during Sunday's Premier League encounter against Liverpool, where Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory at Anfield to claim their first league win at the stadium since 2012.
Ferdinand was particularly impressed with Konsa's display and even encouraged his 18-year-old son Tate, who plays as a centre-back in Brighton's academy, to pay close attention to the Arsenal defender.
The former Manchester United captain believes Konsa's efficiency, composure and defensive intelligence make him an outstanding player, admitting that he would have liked to see the defender join his former club.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand explained that Saliba would still deserve an immediate return to Arsenal's starting lineup once he recovers from injury because of his exceptional quality.
However, he believes Konsa could move to right-back, a position he is familiar with, and compete with Jurrien Timber for a regular place in Arteta's team.
Ferdinand also highlighted how seamlessly the England international has settled into Arsenal's defensive structure, praising the quality of his performances since arriving from Aston Villa.
He believes Konsa's arrival has created a positive selection dilemma for Arteta, who now has several high-quality defensive options available as Arsenal pursue further success this season.
Meanwhile, Arteta expressed his satisfaction after Arsenal ended their long wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield.
The Spanish manager praised his players for their preparation, determination and ability to handle the difficult moments during the contest, describing their performance as remarkable.
Arsenal's victory also strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League table, with Konsa continuing to demonstrate why Ferdinand considers him one of the outstanding defensive signings of the summer.
