According to a report by BBC Sports on Sunday, Octopus 18, 2026, Chelsea continued their impressive run in the Women’s Super League with a commanding victory over Tottenham Hotspur, securing their fifth consecutive league win in a memorable milestone match for manager Sonia Bompastor.
Two goals each from Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter, alongside strikes from substitutes Sjoeke Nusken and Maika Hamano, helped the Blues claim a 6-2 victory and temporarily move to the top of the standings before Manchester City overtook them with their win later on Sunday.
The emphatic result was built on Chelsea’s ruthless second-half performance, during which they scored three goals in a nine-minute spell to take control and leave Tottenham struggling to contain their attacking threat.
The match also marked Bompastor’s 50th game in the Women’s Super League, with the Chelsea manager reaching an extraordinary milestone by accumulating 125 points across her first 50 matches — more than any manager in the competition’s history over the same number of games.
Chelsea began the encounter on the front foot, with James giving the hosts the lead after capitalising on a defensive mistake from Tottenham defender Toko Koga. James dispossessed Koga just outside the penalty area before showing excellent footwork to create space and drive towards goal. The England international then clipped a finish past goalkeeper Lize Kop from a tight angle to put Chelsea ahead.
Despite conceding, Tottenham remained competitive throughout much of the first half and gradually increased the pressure on the hosts. Their persistence was rewarded when Matilda Vinberg headed home Julie Blakstad’s cross at the far post following a sustained spell of attacking pressure. The equaliser gave Tottenham renewed confidence, and they entered the second half looking capable of challenging Chelsea for the points.
The visitors initially enjoyed the better of the exchanges after the restart, but Chelsea’s attacking quality soon proved decisive. United States international Alyssa Thompson produced an excellent piece of dribbling to break into the Tottenham penalty area before delivering a dangerous low cross. Carpenter arrived at the right moment to turn the ball into the net, restoring Chelsea’s lead and shifting the momentum back in favour of the Blues.
Just four minutes later, James struck again to extend the advantage. The forward was played through by Lucy Bronze before curling a superb finish across Kop and into the far corner, giving Chelsea a commanding lead. Tottenham struggled to recover as Chelsea continued to exploit gaps in their defence. Nusken, introduced as a substitute, needed only five minutes on the pitch to make her mark, unleashing a powerful strike to add Chelsea’s fourth goal.
Hamano then produced one of the afternoon’s standout moments, scoring with a swerving effort from approximately 30 yards to make it five. Tottenham managed to find a consolation goal late in the contest when midfielder Signe Gaupset won possession near the edge of Chelsea’s penalty area before taking a touch and firing into the near post.
However, Chelsea had the final say in stoppage time as Carpenter scored her second goal of the match to complete the six-goal haul. The victory underlined Chelsea’s attacking strength and ability to turn a competitive contest into a convincing win through clinical finishing.
For Bompastor, the result provided an appropriate celebration of her 50th WSL match, with her record of 125 points highlighting the consistency she has brought to the club. Chelsea’s fifth consecutive league victory strengthened their title challenge, although Manchester City’s subsequent win meant the Blues could not remain at the summit.
