Cole Palmer’s comments to referee Paul Tierney were captured on RefCam during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton, with the forward booked for repeatedly protesting the official’s decisions.
According to a report by The Athletic on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, footage released by TNT Sports showed Palmer questioning Tierney after a foul involving Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Chelsea secured their second consecutive victory through Pedro Neto’s brace, while also recording their first Premier League clean sheet since January.
However, Palmer’s reaction to the referee attracted attention after he received his second yellow card of the 2026-27 campaign.
Chelsea have struggled with disciplinary issues in recent seasons. During the 2025-26 campaign, they received 98 yellow cards and eight red cards in the Premier League, the highest totals in the division, with dissent contributing to their problems.
In the RefCam footage, Tierney explained his decision by saying, “Pulled his shoulder.” Palmer responded by questioning the consistency of the decision: “That’s not a foul [pointing right], but that’s a foul?”
Tierney then reiterated his explanation and reminded Palmer that he had already warned him about his conduct at half-time.
“He pulled his shoulder. I told you at half-time, go away,” the referee said.
Palmer continued to challenge the decision, replying, “It’s the same foul”.
As Tierney reached for his pocket, the England international attempted to avoid a booking by saying, “Don’t book me”.
The referee subsequently showed Palmer a yellow card and reminded him of his earlier warnings. “I’ve told you,” Tierney said, before adding, “Five times I’ve told you. No.10.”
Despite the incident, Palmer remained involved in Chelsea’s attacking play and showed commitment defensively. Operating behind Joao Pedro in a flexible formation, he also attempted to block a clearance from Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Replays showed no contact between the players, and Tierney awarded a free-kick rather than issuing another yellow card.
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole and ex-Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman agreed that Palmer did not deserve a second booking.
Palmer and Morgan Rogers ultimately avoided suspension, allowing Chelsea to leave Everton with three points.
