Barcelona Star Unlikely to Win Kopa Trophy as Teammate Emerges as Favourite – report

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday October 26, 2026, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi is reportedly unlikely to win the Kopa Trophy, with teammate Lamine Yamal emerging as a potential favourite ahead of Monday night's Ballon d'Or ceremony.

According to journalist Santi Ovalle, Cubarsi's expected absence from Barcelona's travelling delegation could indicate that the prestigious award will go to the teenage winger instead.

Speaking on El Larguero, Ovalle suggested that Cubarsi's absence might offer a significant clue about the likely winner. He explained that if the young defender does not receive the award, the outcome could favour Yamal. However, Barcelona have yet to officially confirm the complete list of representatives attending the ceremony.

Cubarsi has enjoyed an impressive rise under manager Hansi Flick, establishing himself as an important figure in Barcelona's defence. The teenager has demonstrated maturity, intelligent positioning and composure when distributing the ball. His performances at international level have also strengthened his reputation, as he won the young player of the tournament award at the previous World Cup.

Yamal, meanwhile, has developed into one of Barcelona's most influential attacking players. His creativity, individual brilliance and decisive contributions have established him among the world's leading young talents. He is also considered one of the leading contenders for the Ballon d'Or itself.

Ovalle highlighted an interesting historical pattern involving the two individual awards. He noted that no player has ever won both the Kopa Trophy and the Ballon d'Or in the same year. Nevertheless, receiving the youth award does not automatically prevent a footballer from competing for the senior honour.

Although Yamal could secure another major individual recognition, the Kopa Trophy may not be his primary ambition. Cubarsi's potential omission would also disappoint those who believe his consistent performances last season deserve recognition.

The defender has remained a dependable presence despite Barcelona's frequent defensive changes. With uncertainty surrounding the travelling delegation, attention will turn to whether Cubarsi attends and which Barcelona players emerge victorious at the ceremony.
