According to a report by Daily Mirror on Friday, October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick delivered an emotional six-minute speech during his press conference, calling on his players to rediscover the hard-working mentality associated with the club’s greatest teams.
The 45-year-old manager is facing mounting pressure after United won just two of their opening 11 matches under his leadership. Their disappointing run continued on Wednesday with a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, a result that intensified criticism of his tactical decisions.
Captain Bruno Fernandes also questioned the team’s approach after the loss, suggesting that the manager was responsible for the tactical shortcomings. Carrick subsequently used his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League encounter with Bournemouth to address the situation before taking questions from reporters.
He acknowledged that the team’s recent performances had fallen below expectations and admitted that Wednesday’s defeat was particularly painful. The former United midfielder also stressed that supporters deserved to see a team capable of representing the club’s identity on the pitch.
Carrick accepted responsibility for the disappointing results and challenged his players to improve their performances, insisting that the team had moved away from the standards expected at Old Trafford.
He also reflected on Manchester United’s history, referencing former players and managers whose dedication helped establish the club’s reputation. Among those he mentioned were Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs.
The manager used their contributions to emphasise the importance of collective responsibility, hard work and commitment to the team rather than individual recognition.
Carrick’s comments followed his earlier response to Fernandes’ remarks after the Como defeat, when he highlighted the importance of effort regardless of the formation or tactical system employed.
He argued that players must contribute defensively and offensively, explaining that a team cannot expect to win matches without the necessary work rate across the pitch.
The United boss also indicated that players should address their concerns internally rather than publicly discussing disagreements following disappointing results. His position comes amid growing scrutiny of the relationship between the coaching staff and the squad.
Manchester United will now turn their attention to Bournemouth as they attempt to end their poor run of form. The fixture represents an important opportunity for Carrick’s side to respond to criticism and demonstrate improvement after their heavy European defeat.
However, with pressure continuing to build around his position, the manager will need a stronger collective performance to restore confidence among supporters and ease concerns about the team’s direction.
