Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON Qualification Dream Ends After Yesterday's Results

According to a report by Premium Times on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been eliminated from the WAFU-B U-17 Boys’ Championship after playing out a 1-1 draw against Côte d’Ivoire in their final Group B encounter in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Morocco.

The Golden Eaglets went into the encounter knowing that they needed a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive. After suffering a 2-1 defeat to Niger Republic in their opening match, the Nigerian side faced enormous pressure to defeat Côte d’Ivoire and remain in contention for a place in the semi-finals.

However, the young Nigerians were unable to achieve the victory they desperately needed, settling for a draw that proved insufficient to save their campaign.

Côte d’Ivoire made a strong start to the match and took the lead in the 16th minute through Alex Fousseni. The early goal put Nigeria in a difficult position, forcing the team to chase the game against an Ivorian side determined to protect its advantage.

Following the opening goal, the Golden Eaglets attempted to respond by increasing their attacking efforts. Nevertheless, Nigeria struggled to find the breakthrough needed to draw level before the interval, leaving the team with plenty of work to do in the second half.

The Nigerian players continued searching for an equaliser after the restart, aware that another disappointing result would end their participation in the competition. Their determination eventually produced a breakthrough in the 84th minute when Abiodun John scored to make it 1-1.

John’s late goal briefly raised hopes of a possible turnaround, but Nigeria could not find another goal before the referee brought the encounter to an end. The final whistle confirmed a disappointing draw for the Golden Eaglets and brought their hopes of progressing in the tournament to a close.

The elimination represents a major disappointment for Nigeria, a country renowned for its achievements in youth football. The Golden Eaglets have won the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times, establishing themselves as one of the most successful teams in the history of the competition.

Despite that impressive record, Nigeria’s latest failure to progress through the regional qualifiers raises questions about the team's preparation, attacking efficiency and overall performance during the tournament.

Missing out on the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations also means the Golden Eaglets have lost an opportunity to compete for a place at the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. The continental competition provides a pathway towards qualification for the global tournament.

For Nigeria, the immediate priority will be to assess what went wrong during the qualifying campaign and address the weaknesses exposed in the matches against Niger Republic and Côte d’Ivoire.

The Golden Eaglets will need to improve their ability to convert scoring opportunities, maintain consistency throughout matches and respond more effectively under pressure. Their elimination serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s proud history at youth level must be supported by strong preparation and consistent performances if the country hopes to return to the biggest international stages.
