According to a report by the Daily Express on October 23, 2026, Manchester City’s Premier League rivals are reportedly furious over the possibility that the club’s financial charges case could remain unresolved beyond the current season, with concerns growing that the champions could escape punishment for now.
City are appealing the findings in their long-running case involving more than 100 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. The situation has created uncertainty among rival clubs, who are reportedly concerned that a prolonged appeal process could affect the final league standings.
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all but one of the charges it considered, according to the report. The commission concluded that the club had overstated commercial revenues and understated costs by more than £920 million. City, however, have challenged the findings and maintain their position in the ongoing dispute.
The potential consequences remain uncertain, with possible sanctions including a substantial points deduction, a significant financial penalty and, in the most severe circumstances, relegation. Speculation has also surrounded the possibility of Premier League titles being stripped, although no such punishment has been officially announced.
According to The i, Premier League clubs are concerned that the appeal will not be concluded during the current campaign.
A source reportedly said: "The talk among clubs is that nobody can see it getting sorted out this season. That's a massive problem because nobody is sure what they are playing for and whether or not the final positions will stand."
The absence of a confirmed hearing date has added to the uncertainty. An appeal panel has yet to be assembled to examine the case, leaving questions over when a final decision might be delivered.
Premier League regulations state that an appeal commission should issue its verdict within 12 weeks. However, the report notes that this requirement was not in effect when the charges were originally brought, potentially creating another point of contention during the proceedings.
The appeal commission can uphold or overturn some or all of the original findings. It can also refer particular issues back for further consideration or order a fresh commission to examine the case.
Another source expressed frustration over City's decision to pursue the appeal rather than reach a settlement, saying: "City don't appear to accept any guilt. Logically, you would think that having been found guilty on so many charges, they would look for some sort of settlement."
Meanwhile, City have made an impressive start to the new Premier League season, winning all seven of their opening matches, including a 1-0 victory over Manchester United despite being reduced to 10 men.
