Carvajal explains why he chose Getafe after bringing his trophy-filled Bernabeu career to an end

According to a report by GOAL on Friday October 16, 2026, Dani Carvajal has opened up on his decision to join Getafe after ending his trophy-filled spell at Real Madrid, insisting that the opportunity to continue competing and remain in his hometown made the move an easy choice.

The experienced right-back enjoyed tremendous success at the Santiago Bernabeu, winning numerous major trophies during his time with Los Blancos. However, after struggling with injuries, the 34-year-old is now focused on securing regular playing time and rediscovering his best form with Getafe.

Speaking during his presentation, Carvajal explained that the club's project appealed to him both professionally and personally. He also highlighted the importance of remaining in Madrid, where he grew up, while using his experience to help his new teammates.

"It is going to be a positive experience; I am not thinking about making an assessment at the end of the season. It is a project that motivates me a lot. For me, competing is in my DNA. I am in my home, I am in Madrid, where I grew up. All the factors are good; I can lend a hand with my experience, with my way of playing and contributing to the group," he said.

The Spanish defender praised Getafe manager Jose Bordalas, describing him as a coach who knows how to get the best out of his players. Carvajal believes their shared mentality and commitment to hard work will help him adapt quickly to his new surroundings.

Carvajal also acknowledged that his Getafe contract does not offer the same financial rewards as his previous deal at Real Madrid. Nevertheless, he insisted that money was not the priority, as he wanted a project that would allow him to compete consistently.

His injury struggles have also influenced the decision, with the defender eager to regain the continuity he lacked in recent seasons. He has not ruled out returning to the Spanish national team, believing strong performances at Getafe could keep him in contention.

After achieving so much at Real Madrid, Carvajal now faces a different challenge. His immediate priority will be staying fit, earning his place in the team and proving that he can still perform at a high level in Spanish football.
