Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is reportedly considering two Liverpool academy defenders as potential additions to his squad ahead of the upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to a report by The Daily Post on Sunday, October 25, 2026, citing Score Nigeria, Wellity Lucky and Noah Adekoya have emerged as players attracting the attention of the Malian coach.
Both defenders are developing within Liverpool’s youth system and could strengthen Nigeria’s options at the back if Chelle decides to invite them for international duty.
Adekoya has previously expressed his interest in representing Nigeria if approached by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Fulham forward Chibuzo Nwoko has also indicated his willingness to play for the country and has already made his debut in a recent international friendly against Russia.
Unlike Nwoko, Adekoya is yet to make his first official appearance for Nigeria. The defender joined Liverpool from Burnley in January 2026 and has since scored once in four appearances for the club’s Premier League 2 side.
Lucky is another interesting prospect, although his international future remains open. Born in Zaragoza, Spain, he qualifies to represent Nigeria through his parents and is also eligible for Spain and England after spending more than five years in the latter country.
The young defender has previously featured for England at U15 and U16 levels and has also been invited to train with Spain’s U17 squad.
Liverpool regard Lucky as one of their promising defensive talents, with the potential to progress into the senior team. He has already experienced first-team football, having come off the bench during the club’s Carabao Cup meeting with Crystal Palace in October 2025.
Chelle will now be monitoring the progress of the two Liverpool youngsters as he considers his options for the Olympic Eagles. Nigeria are scheduled to face the Democratic Republic of Congo later in November 2026 as preparations continue for their upcoming international commitments.
