Barcelona set to hand La Masia youngsters bigger roles amid injury crisis

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday October 26, 2026, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick could be forced to rely more heavily on La Masia youngsters as the club continue to deal with a growing injury crisis.

The Catalans have suffered several setbacks in recent weeks, leaving Flick with limited options, particularly in defence. Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde reportedly picked up injuries against Real Betis, while Dani Olmo was sidelined after suffering an injury against Paris Saint-Germain.

Xavi Espart became the latest Barcelona player to suffer an injury during Sunday’s El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid. The youngster reportedly sustained an ankle injury that could keep him out for close to two months.

According to reports, the situation has prompted Flick to consider giving more opportunities to academy players as Barcelona prepare for their upcoming fixtures.

Centre-back Alex Campos has already been called up for the matches against PSG and Real Madrid, while midfielder Orien Goren was included in the squad to provide cover following Olmo’s injury.

More young players could now be given the chance to impress as Flick attempts to cope with the absence of several senior stars.

The German coach reportedly believes that many of the recent injuries have resulted from physical contact during matches rather than problems with the team’s preparation. Espart’s setback, which followed a challenge involving Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, is one example cited in the report.

Flick has also given his players two days off following consecutive defeats, allowing them to recover physically and mentally.

However, the break will not solve Barcelona’s selection problems, and the manager may need to find solutions within the club’s academy.

While the absence of experienced players presents a challenge, it could also provide a valuable opportunity for La Masia prospects to prove themselves at senior level.

Barcelona will hope their injured players return as soon as possible, but the performances of the youngsters called upon could become increasingly important as Flick looks to keep his team competitive.
