Cristiano Ronaldo fined €255, suspended 30 days after Portugal walk-out

According to Mirror Football on Monday, October 19, 2026, the Al-Nassr captain allegedly left the squad after a disagreement with Portugal’s new head coach, Jorge Jesus, over his role and involvement in the team.

The incident reportedly took place in Copenhagen ahead of Portugal’s meeting with Denmark. Ronaldo was said to be frustrated after remaining an unused substitute during the previous match against Norway, a decision that allegedly contributed to tensions between the forward and the coach.

Reports indicate that the 41-year-old accused Jesus of failing to honour promises concerning his participation in the team on two separate occasions. The disagreement reportedly escalated before Ronaldo left the camp, creating a disciplinary issue for the national team.

Following the incident, Ronaldo apologised for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates. He also reportedly accepted that the federation had the authority to impose sanctions over his conduct.

The Portuguese Football Federation initially imposed a provisional suspension on the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward on October 9 before confirming the latest disciplinary measures.

However, questions remain about how the punishment will affect Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s forthcoming Nations League fixtures. One particular concern is the scheduled match against Denmark on November 14, although the federation has yet to clarify whether the period covered by the provisional suspension will count towards the final 30-day ban.

Despite the disagreement, Ronaldo has indicated that he wants to continue representing his country. With 234 appearances, he remains Portugal’s most-capped male international and has expressed his intention to play at least one farewell match before bringing his international career to an end.

Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença has reportedly indicated that the organisation would welcome Ronaldo back once the disciplinary matter has been resolved. This suggests that the dispute has not necessarily ended the relationship between the national team and its long-serving captain.

Meanwhile, Jesus has enjoyed a promising beginning to his tenure, reportedly winning his first four matches in charge. The coach must now manage the situation carefully while maintaining discipline within the squad and preparing his players for upcoming international commitments.

Ronaldo’s experience and leadership remain significant assets for Portugal, but the controversy has highlighted the challenges of balancing a legendary player's expectations with a manager’s authority and tactical decisions. The federation’s clarification regarding the suspension will be important in determining the forward’s immediate international future.
