According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday October 25, 2026, Ademola Lookman has come under criticism following Atlético Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña, with club insider Jesús Colino expressing concerns about the Nigerian forward’s recent performances in LaLiga.
Despite Atlético securing all three points, Lookman struggled to make a significant impact before being substituted at half-time by manager Diego Simeone.
The Super Eagles forward has found it difficult to maintain consistency in the Spanish league, and his latest performance has raised further questions about his current form. According to the report, this was the third time in four LaLiga matches that Lookman had been withdrawn before the second half.
Lookman was unable to register a shot or create a scoring opportunity during his 45 minutes on the pitch against Deportivo. His limited involvement in Atlético’s attacking play attracted particular attention, especially as the team looked to break down their opponents.
Colino, writing for AS, delivered a critical assessment of the Nigerian’s display, highlighting his lack of involvement and limited attacking threat.
“He was the Atletico player who touched the ball the least, and in Deportivo’s half, all but one of his passes were backwards,” Colino said.
“He didn't attempt a single dribble either. Substituted at halftime. His form continues to decline.”
The comments reflect growing concern about Lookman’s ability to influence Atlético’s domestic matches. As an attacking player, he is expected to use his pace, movement and dribbling ability to trouble opposing defenders and help create opportunities for his teammates.
However, his performance against Deportivo offered little evidence of that attacking influence, according to Colino’s assessment. His early withdrawal also underlined the difficulties he has experienced in securing a regular place in Simeone’s plans for LaLiga fixtures.
Nevertheless, Atlético’s victory means the team were able to collect three important points despite Lookman’s quiet outing. The result and the forward’s individual performance present two different sides of the same match, with the club achieving its objective while the Nigerian faced further scrutiny.
Interestingly, Lookman’s struggles in the domestic competition contrast with his more encouraging contributions in European football. The Nigerian recently scored against Manchester United before providing an assist in Atlético’s 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart.
