According to a report by GOAL on Sunday October 25, 2026, AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that he spoke with goalkeeper Mike Maignan following his red card during the club’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the UEFA Europa League.
Maignan was sent off after shoving Tyler Adams during a corner-kick situation, leaving AC Milan facing an uphill battle in a difficult European encounter.
The incident attracted attention after the French goalkeeper’s disciplinary lapse put his team in a challenging position. Amorim has now explained that he addressed the situation with Maignan, while also making it clear that the entire squad must take responsibility for its performances.
Speaking to DAZN Italia, Amorim said: “The players are not boys, they are men. Maignan understood right away he cannot do that, we cannot put ourselves in that position.”
The Portuguese manager also stressed that his conversation was not limited to the goalkeeper, revealing that he had spoken with other members of the squad following the defeat.
Amorim believes Milan’s loss was not simply a question of technical quality or tactical decisions. Instead, he suggested that Bournemouth showed greater competitiveness and determination throughout the encounter.
He explained that Milan’s opponents were more competitive, adding that similar concerns had appeared during some of the Italian side’s domestic matches.
According to the manager, Milan must sometimes move away from prioritising attractive football and adopt a more direct and aggressive approach when circumstances demand it.
The defeat has raised further questions about the team’s consistency, particularly as Amorim attempts to balance performances with a growing list of injury problems.
Adrien Rabiot, Mario Gila and Diego Moreira reportedly suffered fitness setbacks during the trip to Bournemouth and were unavailable for the subsequent Serie A fixture against Udinese.
Their absences added to the club’s existing injury concerns, with Samuel Chukwueze, Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers and Pietro Terracciano also reported to be sidelined.
Amorim acknowledged that the demanding football schedule has forced him to manage players’ minutes carefully, explaining that not everyone is physically available for every match.
The injury situation has also required adjustments to his starting lineup and tactical approach, with the manager selecting players according to their fitness and individual characteristics.
Despite the challenges, Amorim wants Milan to improve their intensity and become more competitive in crucial moments. The manager believes technical ability alone is not enough if the team cannot match its opponents’ determination.
Milan’s upcoming fixtures against Bologna and Inter will provide further tests as the team looks to maintain its domestic form and improve its performances.
