Real Madrid have called up academy goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn to join the first-team squad in Barcelona after an unexpected setback for Thibaut Courtois, according to a report from Madrid Universal on Sunday October 25, 2026.
Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of the eagerly anticipated clash against Barcelona, Real Madrid announced through Madrid Universal, citing El Chiringuito.
Voloshyn has already made the trip to Barcelona in an opportunity for the young goalkeeper to be involved in one of the biggest games in European football.
Whilst he will not be playing, Voloshyn is expected to act as the team's back-up goalkeeper but this is an important opportunity for the young goalkeeper to gain experience around the first-team.
Andriy Lunin is expected to start in goal for Jose Mourinho's side after Courtois' absence. The Ukrainian will be under pressure to put in a good performance to help Real Madrid against Barcelona's dangerous attack.
Lunin has played against Barcelona on four occasions previously and Real Madrid have won three of those games. However, he has conceded eight goals in those games and has yet to keep a clean sheet.
This will be under pressure considering Barcelona are expected to have a go at Madrid's defence. The absence of Courtois is a huge concern for Real Madrid.
They will be hoping Lunin can perform under pressure but they also have Voloshyn ready to step in where needed. This unexpected call-up will give the young goalkeeper some valuable experience.
