According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Thursday November 5, 2026, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted that players at Old Trafford regularly experience mental frustration because of the enormous pressure surrounding the club and their continued struggles to meet expectations.
United's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against Roma demonstrated the team's potential when everything comes together, with the Old Trafford supporters providing an electric atmosphere throughout the Champions League encounter.
However, such performances have been inconsistent this season, with the victory representing only their third success across all competitions, highlighting the difficulties Michael Carrick's team continue experiencing.
Fernandes believes several factors beyond the dressing room contribute to United's disappointing performances, explaining that the constant pressure and expectations can negatively affect players psychologically.
The Portuguese midfielder acknowledged that footballers respond differently to the scrutiny, with some handling the demanding environment better than others, while struggling results create additional frustration.
Speaking about the situation, Fernandes explained: "There are a lot of factors outside the dressing room, outside of the players and the backroom staff, which make the performances of the club and what we can do on the pitch more difficult."
He also admitted that failing to meet personal and collective expectations leaves players mentally exhausted, particularly when they believe they are capable of delivering significantly better performances.
"We set high expectations for ourselves, and when things don't work out, we end up mentally crushed by the frustration of not being able to give the club what we believe we're truly capable of," Fernandes added.
The United captain stressed that their problems cannot be attributed to one particular issue, insisting that several aspects of the club require improvement and a different approach.
He continued: "When the situation is like this, there isn't just one problem. There is more than one. There are a lot of things to improve, to do in a different way."
Fernandes also acknowledged that these difficulties have persisted for an extended period, making it increasingly challenging for Manchester United to escape their disappointing cycle.
His comments highlight the psychological challenges affecting the squad, with United needing greater consistency, confidence and resilience to rediscover their best performances.
