Even though it has been a year and a half since Heung-min Son left Tottenham, the mutual love between him and the Spurs fan base has not dissipated even a little bit.

Heung-min Son goes down as one of the biggest legends in Tottenham’s history, and he deservedly ended his time at the club by lifting the Europa League trophy as captain in Bilbao.

The forward left the North London club after an emotional goodbye in his home country during last summer’s pre-season after 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 games for the club.

Son returned to Tottenham to say goodbye to Spurs fans in person back in December of last year, and almost a year on, he still has the same affection for his former club.

Heung-min Son admits he still misses Tottenham and their supporters

The 34-year-old has continued posting outstanding numbers since his move to Los Angeles FC, and no matter which stadium he goes to, Son is cheered on by the Spurs supporters club in that part of America.

After LAFC’s 1-1 draw against New York City FC on Saturday, the Tottenham legend was asked about the support of the New York Spurs supporters club.

Journalist Eli Kronenberg also specifically told the forward that there was one fan in attendance in New York, who shared that her six-year-old son cried when Son left the Lilywhites.

When asked about the kind of support he receives from Spurs fans, Son said: “It’s crazy, actually. I’m the biggest Spurs supporter. Everywhere I go, I see Spurs shirts with my name on the back. It makes me so so proud. I’m just so grateful to see those kinds of fans.

“I cried too when I left this amazing club, so I can understand how those fans felt. Sometimes football is like this. You can’t stay forever. It was a nice goodbye, and it’s been a year and a half; it’s been a while. I still miss them. I always wish the best for them.”

Spurs are still feeling the absence of Son’s quality and leadership

They say you do not appreciate the true value of something until it’s gone, and that is certainly applicable to Tottenham fans with Son.

The forward did come under some criticism during his final season at the club, where it appeared that he had lost his legs.

However, the South Korean was one of the best finishers in world football over his decade at Tottenham, and the drop-off in the Lilywhites’ goals since his depature paints a clear story. What Roberto De Zerbi’s side wouldn’t give to have a finisher of Son’s quality at the club right now.

The former Tottenham captain’s departure also left a leadership vacuum which Cristian Romero could not fill, and it almost ended with the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
