Lionel Messi was once again the difference-maker for Inter Miami as the Argentine superstar inspired a 2-1 comeback victory over New England Revolution to secure qualification for the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The former Barcelona captain provided an assist before scoring the winning goal in Sunday’s Major League Soccer encounter at Gillette Stadium, helping the Herons climb to second place in the Eastern Conference.
According to GOAL, Miami had to recover from a difficult opening period against a New England side that enjoyed the better opportunities before the interval.
However, despite the hosts’ dominance, neither team managed to break the deadlock in the first half.
New England eventually made their pressure count in the 53rd minute when Daniel Gazdag fired past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to hand the home side the advantage.
With Miami struggling to find a response, Messi stepped up to turn the contest around.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner produced a clever backward header to set up German Berterame, who restored parity in the 69th minute.
Messi then completed the turnaround in the 83rd minute, weaving his way past several defenders before combining with Telasco Segovia and sending a low left-footed effort beyond New England goalkeeper Matt Turner.
The Revolution thought they had rescued a point late in the encounter when Miami defender Ian Fray inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
However, the effort was ruled out for offside, allowing the visitors to hold on for an important victory.
The result ensured Miami secured their place in next year’s CONCACAF Champions Cup with one regular-seas
