Marie Bouzková secured a hard-fought 6:3, 6:4 victory against fellow Czech player Sára Bejlek in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 hard-court tournament in Ningbo, China. The match pitted two Billie Jean King Cup champions against each other in a physical battle. Bouzková needed to weather a fierce second-set comeback from the 20-year-old Bejlek before closing out the win in straight sets.
The encounter immediately drew high praise from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which spotlighted two extraordinary rallies that captivated spectators and broadcasters alike. British journalist Candy Reid exclaimed during the live broadcast that the level of play reached an “insane level,” while former Australian player Louise Pleming laughed in sheer disbelief at the court coverage and defensive agility displayed by both competitors.
The turning points highlighted by the tour governing body occurred during intense baseline exchanges. The first took place in the opening set with Bouzková leading 5:2, where Bejlek sprinted from corner to corner to retrieve seemingly impossible shots before Bouzková finally ended the point with a difficult volley. The second unforgettable sequence arrived on Bouzková’s match point at 40:40 in the tenth game of the second set, ending only when Bejlek was on her back after yet another rally.
The contest followed a distinct tactical shift between sets. Bouzková raced to a 3:0 lead to open the match by breaking Bejlek’s serve early, eventually locking down the first set 6:3. The momentum flipped dramatically in the second frame when Bejlek surged ahead 3:0 with aggressive baseline play. Bouzková erased the deficit to level at 3:3, broke again to edge ahead, and ultimately weathered late pressure on her own serve to seal the semifinal berth.
The Ningbo result formed part of a successful Friday for Czech tennis across Asia. While Bouzková advanced in China, doubles world number one Kateřina Siniaková dominated her quarterfinal at the tournament in Osaka, Japan, dismantling American player Stoianaová 6:1, 6:2. Siniaková controlled the match from 1–1 in the opening set, securing her first singles semifinal appearance on the WTA Tour since reaching the penultimate round in Seoul last September.
Further down the competitive pathway, young Czech junior Jana Kovačková booked her spot in the semifinals at the ITF Junior Finals in Chengdu, China, by defeating Skljarová 6:2, 6:1 in Group B. Back in Ningbo, Bouzková’s run ultimately concluded in the semifinals, where she fell to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
